Jonas Spring was born in Marseilles, France, but grew up in downtown Toronto from the age of four. He worked with youth during his adolescence and young adulthood, always finding a way to connect with people particularly through hands on learning.
His lifelong interest in the urban environment led first to a certificate in Landscape Design from Ryerson University and then a BSc. Honours in Agroecology from the University of British Columbia (UBC). Jonas began teaching professionally, first as a teaching assistant and then as a sessional instructor in the Agricultural Sciences Department at UBC. In addition Jonas has been invited to lecture at Humber College School of Environmental Technology, Ryerson Polytechnic University Landscape Architecture Program and the Community lecture series at UBC. More recently, Jonas has taught Horticultural Sciences at Ryerson Polytechnic University as part of the Landscape Design certificate program.
A passion for horticulture, ecology, food and cities has helped Jonas navigate towards a fulfilling career in the landscaping industry. Jonas has owned and operated "Ecoman", a residential landscaping and gardening business in downtown Toronto since 2003. Ecoman specializes in dry shade urban environments, providing clients with exterior property maintenance inspections, consultation, design, contracts and installation of natural stone patios, walls, plant selection and maintenance. Ecoman also installs and maintains green roofs, with over 12000 sq. ft. installed in various locations across the city. Jonas is a member in good standing of the Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association, and is a certified installer of the Xeroflor green roof system.
Jonas was the recipient of the Dean Blythes Eagles Medal from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at UBC, and a Community Service Award for founding and organizing the annual community dinner, a tradition that has lasted almost ten years. As an undergraduate student, Jonas participated in two SEED
projects at UBC designed to bring faculty, staff and students together on the care of the Quercus rubra (Red Oak) alley; and monitoring the pesticide and herbicide free zone on campus.
Jonas is active in the community, interested in world as well as local affairs. He can be found regularly perusing what looks fresh at Wychwood Barns Farmers’ Market and striking up political discussions on municipal affairs. Jonas also enjoys making music with Samba Squad, an award winning Afro-Brazilian percussion ensemble, playing hockey and/or spending time with family and friends.
